Cooking During a Kitchen Remodel

Here’s the thing - we TRIED. Before our latest kitchen remodel, I researched “cooking during a remodel,” and I found limited information. So, being a classic overachiever, I set up a cooking station (see the image below for proof). I even brought in the air fryer. We had a coffee station upstairs. It worked for maybe a week before I decided that cooking without a kitchen (especially a sink/dishwasher/counterspace) is just not a good idea.

Take it from me and the week we spent hosing off dishes in the backyard - it’s really not possible to cook during a kitchen remodel. BUT, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a plan! Here’s what I tell my clients:

1) Set up your coffee/dinner station somewhere OTHER THAN the kitchen. Notice I said DINNER STATION, not COOKING STATION. We’re talking paper plates, napkins, cups, etc. You can add a microwave here as well. Buy those liquid creamers you don’t have to refrigerate (read on to #2 to see why).

2) Talk to your contractor about where the fridge will go during your remodel. It may be moving from room to room or getting wrapped behind drop cloths, and you will still need to access it for things like school lunches (though consider being a bit more lenient with the junky, shelf-stable stuff - it’s a season).

3) Factor in a budget for eating out, and embrace it. Make a list of your fave takeout/delivery places nearby. To keep it fun, assign one restaurant or idea to each night of the week (you know the drill - “Taco Tuesday,” etc.). Place orders ahead of time on delivery apps as much as possible because you’ll have a lot on your plate (no pun intended). And find a comfy spot to eat, ideally not at dog height.
